Zed Suite WebP Convertor Plugin for WordPress
JPEG files often leave you with undesirable artifacts in the images and they don't support transparency/alpha channel.
PNG supports transparency/alpha channel, but because it is lossless, the files are often a lot larger than JPEGs.
When it comes to your website, you want the site to download fast, as well as look polished.
That's why WebP was created. WebP supports transparency/alpha channel, and has an incredible compression ratio. 75% compression ratio on WebP yields a better image quality than 90% compression ratio on JPEG, and a smaller file than 75% compression ration on JPEG. It's simply a win win.
I tried all the WebP Convertor plugins for WordPress, but they all did one thing that irritated me. They left you with both an optimized set of WebP files, as well as the original JPEG/PNG files.
Not only is this annoying in that you have to physically verify you are adding the WebP version to your site, but it is a waste of valuable storage on the server.
Zed Suite WebP Convertor is a plugin that is part of the Zed Suite package of WordPress plugins, but we decided to make the WebP Convertor free of charge in an effort to help WordPress designers and developers reduce the traffic cost of their websites.
Simply upload the plugin's ZIP file (found under Releases), and start uploading your images. WebP will convert each image into WebP and if successfully converted, it will then remove the original image that was uploaded, leaving you will just the WebP files.
By default it uses 75% compression, but you can open the ZS WebP Convertor submenu under Media in wp-admin, and change the setting there as well as test it using a series of sample PNG files, where you can slide the bar changing between before and after.
We are planning more features, such as converting all existing images to WebP, or converting selected images to WebP. So check back for new versions regularly.
